From the Beatles and Bowie to Sting and Madonna, many musicians have moonlighted on the big screen.

Which movies featuring musical artists are some of your favorites (or favorite guilty pleasures)? And which ones (either the movies themselves or the acting attempts) were such bombs they left you permanently scarred from the experience?

I'll be the first to admit that I finally saw the movie Mamma Mia in mid-January, and I've spent the last three weeks and numerous hard-rock albums trying to scrub the soundtrack out of my brain. (Aerosmith works, but only for a little while.)

Out, out, *$%! hook-laden Swedish pop!

For sheer enjoyment you can't go wrong with A Hard Day's Night.  Help was OK but not as much fun as the Beatles' first movie.

I must admit though that my favorite rock and roll movie of all time is Head starring the Monkees.  This movie is very underappreciated for its daring at the time and for its message to the outside world.  And it contains some excellent music, too ("The Porpoise Song", "As We Go Along", "Circle Sky", etc).

The one rock and roll movie of the sixties that was totally disappointing was Having a Wild Weekend by the Dave Clark Five.  The DC5 were my second favorite British invasion band (behind the Beatles) but the movie was almost unwatchable.  I realize that these guys were musicians and not actors, but their stiffness may it appear they were all propped up on hat racks.
