I have a question about what's legal to sell and what isn't. I thought I knew the answer to this question, but after reading through ads in Goldmine I'm not sure I do. Is it legal to sell CD-Rs made from your LPs for profit? If the answer is no then why am I seeing what appears to be this exact kind of selling going on? If the answer is yes, why is it so? I thought it was illegal to do so. Just curious (and confused) more than anything. Thanks for any info anyone can offer.

I see that as of today 33 folks have stopped by to look at this, but no one has anything to share that would clear up the confusion I am having on this topic. I AM NOT out to bring legal action against anyone. I just don't understand this situation. I saw someone offering a copy of Sgt. Pepper in mono on what was clearly described as a cd-r. To my mind the only way this is possible is the person ran their copy of the vinyl off onto disc OR they are making a copy of the newly released mono version (or some variation thereof). It sounded illegal, but it was a store ad so I figured there must be some exception I am unaware of that makes this allowable.

Part of the reason I ask is that I am currently transferring old 8 track Quad tapes to DVD-A discs. If it is legal for me to sell them I might offer them for sale as I am currently unemployed and could use the extra income while I am looking for a job. But I wouldn't want to do it if it wasn't legal to do so. That's why I am looking for someone who can help me understand what is and is not allowed in this area.

Again, thanks for any info anyone can offer.

I'm all but certain it is indeed illegal to make and sell copies like that. It tends to be poorly enforced in my experience, but it is illegal. Even doing it for your own use is technically legal only if you have an original copy of the recording.

Thank you for the clarification. Like I mentioned I thought I was right in my understanding on that topic. Indeed, I haven't seen the store's ads in Goldmine since I spotted the albums that brought the question to mind.
